Hyper-Realistic Pencil Portrait by Shania McDonagh

16-year-old artist Shania McDonagh has participated in the Texaco Children’s Art Competition for the past four years and won first prize in her age category, but it was her hyperrealistic portrait entitled “Coleman” - a close-up facial study of a man she saw in the Vanishing Ireland series of books created in pencil and took her about one month to finish - that finally won her the top prize.

Judging panel chairman Prof. Declan McGonagle, director of the National College of Art & Design, said her work has established her “as one of the most talented artists of her generation, and one whose skill could see her become one of Ireland’s foremost portrait artists of the future”.

She will be honoured and presented with her $2,075 (€1,500) first-prize award at the prize giving ceremony in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham next month.
