Beeswax Sculptures by Ren Ri

Beijing-based artist Ren Ri created sculptures of beeswax by collaborating with bees.

The artist has created 2 series, titled 'Yuansu I: The Origin of Geometry', which is a collection of maps made in beeswax, and 'Yuansu II' where the sculptures are embedded in transparent plastic polyhedrons.

For his 'Yuansu II' project, in order to induce the insects to create symmetrical wax sculptures, the queen bee is suspended at the center of the geometric space, while the worker bees build around her.

Every seven days (a reference to the 7 days of creation), Ri changed the orientation of the developing honeycomb by rotating the box on a different side. Ri determines how to shift the box by the roll of a dice.

“Beeswax is a very special material. It’s unstable and can change shape with temperature. The structure of wax cells is orthohexagonal, which is an inconceivable feature in the natural world and it’s a peculiarity of honeybees. Another reason behind the choice of bees is that I wanted to try to eliminate the subjectivity of the artist and the mediation of bees served this purpose.”

These beautifully-peculiar sculptures will be at T Museum for Contemporary Art in Hangzhou during the exhibition “Fusion-Convergence,” through August 7th.
