Horsham, Victoria, Australia artist Michael, aka Moerkey, bends and solders discarded keys and coins into beautiful art.



“Not so long ago, when I was supposed to be cleaning out my shed, I came across some old copper pipe saved from a previous renovation. I cut it up into rings and started making it into spheres. The first ones were a bit rough but once I worked out the technique I got creative.”



“I’m a bit of a hoarder and searched around for all those old keys and copper wire, that were no longer needed, and got creative with them as well.”



"My work space is a small space in our garage which is jammed packed with bikes, camping gear, woodworking tools and timber and now numerous bits of old copper pipe, keys and pennies which are the raw materials from which I create these works of art."

Hobo Nickels by Paolo Curcio

The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form where miniature bas relief are carved into coins.



Barcelona-based artist Paolo Curcio (aka “mrthe”) creates these amazing hobo nickel art using a variety of different coins made from multiple layers of metal (clad coins).

Tools Made of Coins by Stacey Webber

Indiana-based artist Stacey Webber create sculptures that resemble everyday tools made of coins.



"I became interested in making artwork which expressed the struggles of the everyday blue collar American during the economic downtown around 2005. It seemed natural with a training in jewelery to work with coins - they are small, metal, and literally represent value."



"After researching and making endless amounts of samples/experiments I became fascinated with older pennies (pre-1982) which are solid copper and vintage silver quarters, dimes, and nickels. Copper and silver are traditionally used in metalsmithing's history making it the perfect relationship between concept and craft."



"Each piece is completely different pertaining to time. Every sculpture is a one-of-a-kind design, so the larger ones, of course, take more time in engineering and fabrication."



"It is fairly difficult to work with coins because each coin is a different alloy depending on the year and country. Different alloys require research on the possibilities of connecting - welding, soldering, riveting, etc. I have chosen to make constructions using American coins that not only relate to my concepts but also make use of my technical training."

Coin Mural by Stefan Sagmeister

Typographer and Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister created this mural on Waagdragerhof Square in Amsterdam made of 250,000 Eurocents coins.



The coins were sorted into 4 different shades, and carefully placed over 300 sqm area. It took 8 days to complete the installation, with the help of more than 100 volunteers.



"I have rarely been obsessed with things in my personal life. I cannot worry about the right shade of green for the sofa, the details of a sexual ex-lover or the proper temperature of the AC meeting room. However, I am obsessed with my work and I think that many of our best projects have come out of this obsession."



The back of each coin was painted blue to indicate whether or not someone has taken a coin from the installation.



After completion the coins were left free and unguarded for the public to interact with.



"In the morning somebody showed up with a couple of plastic bags and started putting the coins into his bags. Apparently one of the neighbours saw this and thought this person is “stealing the artwork”, and called the police. They showed up, talked to the guy with the bags, who had no problem with leaving everything right there. Somehow the police must have thought that is not enough to protect the artwork, and after trying to reach the owner of it, they decided to get into action themselves. They called a city cleaning company and cleaned up the whole square with brooms, and brought all the coins to a “safe” room at the police department."

Geometric Coin Sculptures by Robert Wechsler

Artist Robert Wechsler used a jeweler’s saw to cut precise notches in coins from various currencies and then joined them together in several geometric forms for his series 'Money'.
