Metallic Gel Pens Drawings by John Paul "Lakan" Olivares

Filipino artist John Paul "Lakan" Olivares creates these beautiful drawings using metallic gel pens on the black (reverse) side of illustration board.

"My art has always been a sort of advocacy, where I share for people to experience more on what I know . . . and in this case it is the divine world. I am in pursuit of my spiritual path, and in that journey visions are revealed to me which I share through art, and at times I share them through the written word."

"In my earlier works, my paintings also revolved an advocacy to share aspects of the traditional indigenous cultures of the Philippines, such as their myths and arts. This was nurtured by my interaction with the various indigenous groups here, and I have been adopted by two "tribes"."

Reflective Anamorphic Drawings by István Orosz

Anamorphosis is an art of distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to use special devices or occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image.

Hungarian artist István Orosz created these amazing anamorphic image, where a conical or cylindrical mirror is placed on the drawing to transform a flat distorted image into a three dimensional picture that can be viewed from many angles.

Paper Sculptures by Jennifer Collier

Jennifer Collier creates replicas of everyday items made of old papers.

"I remake household items from found & recycled papers, giving new life to items that would otherwise be thrown away."

"My practice focuses on creating work from paper; by bonding, waxing, trapping and stitching I produce unusual paper ‘fabrics’, which are used to explore the ‘remaking’ of household objects. The papers are treated as if cloth, with the main technique employed being stitch – a contemporary twist on traditional textiles."

"The papers themselves serve as both the inspiration and the media for my work, with the narrative of the books and papers suggesting the forms, for example a sewing machine made from dress making patterns, or a camera out of vintage photographs."

"I tend to find papers, by scouring charity shops and flea markets, then investigate a way in which they can be reused and transformed; giving new life to things that would otherwise go unloved or be thrown away."

"ALL of my work is handmade by me, and all incorporate hand or machine stitch. Many simply start life as a simple doodle in my diary. My way of working is essentially still based on the processes of my past work and my textiles training- making a pattern, producing a toile to check the pattern or template ‘works’ and then creating the ‘real’ piece of work from beautiful found and recycled papers. In layman’s terms it is a bit like then you draw the net of a box from scratch, cut it out, fold and construct it; but mine are much more complicated shapes…"

Chlorophyll Printing by Binh Danh

Vietnamese-born photographer and artist Binh Danh prints on leaves by placing a negative of a photo on the leaf, which is then exposed to sunlight over a period of time. The green pigments of the plant will darken accordingly, which results in a ghostly and monochrome image that are preserved in a block of resin. He calls it 'Chlorophyll Printing'.

"One summer, I was motivated to experiment with photosynthesis and its pigments after observing how grass changed color under a water hose that was left on the lawn. Soon after that, I was making chlorophyll prints."

"In my work, photosynthesis is used to record images onto leaves using only chlorophyll and light: the life source of plants and, consequently the Earth. The leaves are then cast in resin, like biological samples for scientific studies."

"This process deals with the idea of elemental transmigration: the decomposition and composition of matter into other forms. The images of war are part of the leaves, and live inside and outside of them. The leaves express the continuum of war. They contain the residue of the Vietnam War: bombs, blood, sweat, tears, and metals. The dead have been incorporated into the landscape of Vietnam during the cycles of birth, life, and death; through the recycling and transformation of materials, and the creation of new materials. As matter is neither created nor destroyed, but only transformed, the remnants of the Vietnam and American War live on forever in the Vietnamese landscape."

Slate Sculptures by Stephen Kettle

British sculptor Stephen Kettle created this 1.5 ton statue of Alan Turing located at Bletchley Park in Britain, made exclusively with slate.

It took a total of 18 months to complete.

"Stacking slate, and the process involved, takes a great deal of time and the process can not be speeded up without compromising quality which, I couldn’t do. Accurate stone -work is the real core of my identity and I have self imposed a set of rules that I would find difficult to deviate from."

"When I am working on a piece, I almost begrudge my time away from it because I enjoy it that much. All of my sculptures are created using shadow as well as light. Stacked slate has to be lit correctly to show how it can cut light. I find that getting this message across is the most difficult part of my work."
