Albanian artist Saimir Strati created some of the most original and impressive mosaics in the world.
"I look at different things that attract my attention and think of turning them into mosaics."
"I was especially inspired when I first visited the ruins of the ancient town of Apollonia. There I saw leftovers of antique mosaics. I find it really fascinating that some buildings only last about one hundred years, while some mosaics can resist time for more than 3000 years. They are just like skeletons of dinosaurs."
Nail Mosaic - Leonardo Da Vinci
In 2006, Saimir Strati re-created the self portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci using nearly 400 kilos of industrial nails over a 6 1/2 x 13 feet surface. The technique resembles digital photography, in that each nail represents a pixel.

It took 500,000 nails and 24 days to complete. This nail mosaic won Saimir Strati his first Guinness Record, on September 4, 2006, as the World's Largest Nail Mosaic.
Toothpick Mosaic - Reinless Spirit

It took 13 hours a day, for 40 days, to finish this 8m2 (86.11 sq. feet) artwork.

The work was dedicated to Antonio Gaudi, and was confirmed on September 4, 2007 as the World's Largest Toothpick Mosaic.
Cork Mosaic - Mediterraneana
In August 2008, Strati used 229,764 corks of various shapes and sizes over a surface of 12.94m x7.10m, or 91.87m2 to create “Romeo with a crown of grapes playing the guitar while dancing with the sea and the sun”, a homage to life around the Mediterranean.

Using the same technique people used to create mosaics 2,000 years ago, Saimir Strati worked 14 hours a day, for 28 days.
Paint Brush Mosaic - Michael Jackson
In October 2009, Strati created a giant mosaic of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, using paint brushes. The installation was presented on the side of a truck, in Durres, 40 km from Albania’s capital city, Tirana.
