There are a lot of beautiful designed and colored manhole covers in Japan. For the past several years photographer S. Morita has traveled around Japan photographing artistic manhole covers.
It all started almost 35 years ago, when a bureaucrat in the construction ministry suggested municipalities to design their own manhole covers, thereby making the high cost of sewage projects a little more palatable while encouraging taxpayers to take pride in their local area. Since then, a lot of artists are inspired to create and stylise beautiful manhole covers everyday.
According to the Japan Society of Manhole Covers, today there are almost 6000 artistic manhole covers throughout Japan.
