Tiny Embroidered Animals by Chloe Giordano

Oxford based illustrator and embroidery artist Chloe Giordano creates this stitched illustrations of tiny animals rendered with freehand embroidery, layering countless thread colors to make the detailed work.

"I’m just packing the stitches together and using sewing thread. I wanted to go into traditional illustration before I began sewing so I’ve spent a lot of time drawing and painting and still work from a detailed sketch, which I think probably helps."

"I approach needle painting a lot like how I paint, and I wouldn’t paint with one colour at a time, so I have several on the go so I can blend as I stitch. I guess I can see how one at a time would work with traditional needle painting, but since I tend to work with several tones at the same time and in a very small space I would be tying off and changing colour every couple of minutes."

Intricate Stitched Portraits by Maria E. Piñeres

Colombia-born Los Angeles-based artist Maria E. Piñeres creates these intricate portraits of people.

"Portraiture has always been one of my favorite subjects in art. When I first started needlepointing, I did some portraits but they were very simple. I came back around to doing them recently, I think now that I know the medium better I can experiment in a more painterly way which makes it challenging."

"I pick my image, usually from a photo sitting I’ve done. I will sometimes tweak the color and contrast and play with cropping in Photoshop. Then, I print it out to size. Once I splice the canvas together, I lay the print over and I cut away at the print as I figure out color and patterns to block in the areas."

Thread Paintings by Stephanie K Clark

Salt Lake City-based artist Stephanie K Clark creates embroidered art pieces of houses, log cabins and cars that look like paintings.

"I considers myself a painter and I paint with thread. The process of transforming string into art struck me as something visually stimulating with complex simplicity."

"The embroidery floss is my palette and the needle is my paintbrush. I create a method of embroidering the threads in an arrangement that would initially create value, color, depth and as I lay the colors down they instantly blend themselves. This process has had its way with me, leading me from hobby to art."

"My work is an ode and influenced by the worlds of tapestry and my love for craft. Using thread instead of oils has allowed me to bring new purpose to my painting process. My work blurs the lines between fine art and craft."

"I like to think I can reclaim the word “craft” which contains the idea of an unusual frame of knowledge and skill passed on from generation to generation. The use of craft such as embroidery fits my concept of domesticity, therefore my process and material becomes involved in the concept of my work."

“When I embroider on canvas it feels like oils; it flows, it blends, and it’s rich.”

“When I embroider on loose shear or silk, it’s like a watercolor; its delicate, the thread goes where it wants to go, and it moves with the fabric.”

Embroidered Travel Snapshots by Teresa Lim

Textile artist Teresa Lim embroiders detailed places she visits when she travels the world, in her ongoing series 'Sew Wanderlust'.

“I started the project late 2014 after I realised that with today’s state of the art technology, taking pictures becomes so easy. I wanted something more from my travels, to be able to take back a part of that place with me. One thing I realised is that when you take a photo of a place, you don’t actually pick up as much detail as when you actually sit down and draw or sew it. When I’m done with a piece, I actually feel like I KNOW that place, and that gives me a huge sense of satisfaction that I think just taking a photo wouldn’t give.”
