92-Year-Old Grandmother Creates Amazing Temari Balls

We have seen beautiful Temari Balls in our previous post here.

Traditionally, parents often give Temari to their children on New Year’s day as special gift.

The mother would placed a small piece of paper with a goodwill wish for her child inside the Temari. The child would never be told what wish his or her mother had made while making the ball.

Japan graphic designer and Flickr user NanaAkua photographed this amazing collection of Temari balls created by her 92-year-old grandmother over a span of 30 years. She began to master the art in her 60s and has since created nearly 500 pieces.

"My grandma's works. She had started learn Temari when she was 60s, and then she got a diploma of Temari."

Her grandmother used to teach volunteers every Saturday, but now as she is 92 years old, she stops teaching but still making Temari. They are not for sale.

Temari Balls

Temari balls are an folk art form that originated in China and were introduced to Japan five or six hundred years ago.

The balls were originally made by mothers and grandmothers for the children to play with. Historically they were constructed from the remnants of old kimonos.

Temari are highly valued and cherished gifts, symbolizing deep friendship and loyalty. Also, the brilliant colors and threads used are symbolic of wishing the recipient a brilliant and happy life.
