Tape Art by Buff Diss

Australian street artist Buff Diss create beautiful street art made exclusively using tape.

“Tape became my main medium in 2005 by accident. I’d meant to use it as a tool, but then I saw the lines of tape were drawings on their own—it saved a lot of time.”

“If a piece has long enough to bond to the surface, without weather getting to it first, it can hold for years. On glass, they become permanent. But a lot of pieces in the street will be gone the next day.”

Tape Collage by No Curves

Italian collage artist No Curves created these geometric artworks exclusively with adhesive tape by carefully slices strips of tape and layers the colors together.

Geometric Tape Art by Aakash Nihalani

Artist Aakash Nihalani uses colored tape to create various geometric forms in locations around New York.

"I stumbled upon using tape by accident… I was using a painter’s roll to attach some screen prints to the wall for a student exhibition. There was a pedestal in the space that was casting a cubic shadow on the floor that matched the shapes I was using in my prints, so I outlined the shadow with the tape. It all made sense in that moment…"

"Coming from a suburban neighborhood, I was captivated by the urban architecture of the city when I moved here: big boxes, filled with smaller boxes, an endless network of cubes."

"Working with tape, my work differs from other street art in that it revels in the temporary. I like the flexibility of it, and that it’s not damaging to the built environment I’m working on."

"For however briefly, I am trying to offer people a chance to step into a different New York than they are used to seeing, and in turn, momentarily escape from routine schedules and lives."

"We all need the opportunity to see the city more playfully, as a world dominated by the interplay of very basic color and shape."

Amazing Scotch Tape Sculpture

The “Off the Roll” is a yearly tape sculpture contest sponsored by 3M that challenges people to create artworks using only Scotch tape. The models had to be made using Scotch packaging tape and the winner will receive $5000. Other materials, such as wire, cardboard and paint, can make up to ten per cent of the model if used to support or enhance it.

Entries were open to a public vote, which accounted for 10 percent of the final scores. Winning entries were chosen by a panel of experts on the following criteria: creativity, execution, presentation and online public votes

“Free Fallin” by Jake Longenecker from Manheim, Pennsylvania. Using 15-and-a-half rolls of tape, he nabbed first place and take home the $5,000 cash prize. The artwork depicts a WWII era paratrooper in mid drop.

2012 First Runner-up

Abigail Colety from Austin, Texas won $1,000 as runner-up for “Game Night”, a depiction of two people playing draughts, made using 9 rolls of tape.

2012 Second Runner-up

"One Octopus Band" by Lila Ferber, from Omaha, Neb, using 55 rolls of Scotch Packaging Tape. The octopus 660 tape suction cups and the sculpture has movable parts like trumpet valves, flute keys & fishing line strings.

Gavin Mann Puyallup, Wa. depicted “The Creation of Adam”. It took him two weeks to finish this.

2011 Winner

"The Big One" by Kent Hathaway of Oklahoma City. Using 12 rolls of tape, he won the grand prize. The artwork depicts an eventful fishing trip.

Cameron Nunez from Apopka, FL, was awarded $500 as a first runner up for his creation "Sing and Scream Along". His sculpture using 24 rolls of tape.

"A Strange Way of Going" by Annie K. The sculpture is 8.5 feet tall and made of 32 rolls of tape. Flour was used to colour the ruffled tentacles and battery-powered LEDs light the jellyfish.

"The Hungry Pelican" by Ed L, Eastchester, NY. He tried to play with the transparency, showing the fishes' skeletons and the fish in the pelican's belly.

Layered Landscapes by Brooks Shane Salzwedel

LA-based mixed media artist Brooks Shane Salzwedel creates these beautiful layered images of natural landscapes using graphite, tape, and resin, giving a three-dimensional feel.

"The graphite helps develop texture - to give it a painterly quality when up close. the mylar is not only fun to draw on but also gives the pieces the layered depth. and lastly the resin holds it all together and gives it closure so to speak. once it's cast in resin... there is no turning back."
