Painting Dragons with a Single Brush Stroke

The talented Sumie painters from a small studio called Kousyuuya in Nikko, Japan, can paint the body of a dragon with a single stroke of the brush, a technique known as Hitofude Ryuu (Dragon with one stroke)

The studio been around for four generations and have been creating these amazing paintings for decades.

To paint a single dragon, the artists first make the ornate head using a smaller brush. Then, they dip a much larger sumie brush into the desired paint color and simply swipe it across the canvas in one swift movement.

New 3D Paintings by Shintaro Ohata

Japanese artist Shintaro Ohata (previously here) is back with two new sculptures placed in front of his paintings with a childhood theme.

"A balloon itself is nothing. However, it can be something important. We all experience that same sad feeling when a balloon suddenly sails into the sky, getting smaller and smaller as it drifts away. Although the balloon is not in our hands anymore, the feeling of it is stored in our memory."

"We can see the sky when we can successfully do this so we challenge ourselves again and again until it's dark."

"This girl has just successfully completed her reverse ride and is now looking over the sky with joy. I thought the landscape seen at that time could be something like a 'time traveling tunnel' that reminds people of childhood."

"These fragments of our memory are what I'm trying to express through my works."

You can see his artworks and other 22 artworks from 4 different artists (Enpei Ito, Yoddogawa Technique, Akira Yoshida and Osamu Watanabe) at Mizuma Gallery, Singapore, in the exhibition called 'Sweet Paradox', from now till August 10.

Japan’s Artistic Manhole Covers

There are a lot of beautiful designed and colored manhole covers in Japan. For the past several years photographer S. Morita has traveled around Japan photographing artistic manhole covers.

It all started almost 35 years ago, when a bureaucrat in the construction ministry suggested municipalities to design their own manhole covers, thereby making the high cost of sewage projects a little more palatable while encouraging taxpayers to take pride in their local area. Since then, a lot of artists are inspired to create and stylise beautiful manhole covers everyday.

According to the Japan Society of Manhole Covers, today there are almost 6000 artistic manhole covers throughout Japan.

You can see some of them in Morita’s photos here
