Some Changes Were Made by Cybèle Young

Toronto based artist Cybèle Young created miniature paper sculptures that depict everyday objects and metamorphosing into unusual organic lifeforms, crafted from Japanese papers.

"My practice consists of making miniature sculptures from fine Japanese papers, some of which are embellished using etchings and other media. I create exact miniature replicas of real life objects and abstract shapes. Before the sculptures are sequestered to life under glass, I often animate their moving parts in stop motion film works, offering clues to their fictional history."

"Engaging with abstract and familiar motifs, I juxtapose sculptures to create a sense of dialogue or play between them. I approach my work in series and components, ultimately building an ongoing inventory of personal experience and observation."

"I compile these in various arrangements to create communities that interact and form new relationships – much like the small seemingly insignificant moments in our everyday lives that come together to create unexpected outcomes. These manifest as miniature theatres – one act plays, where shifts of scale and perception occur. Despite the absence of the human form there is an implied presence, where the viewer can project themselves into another world."

Recycled Book Pages Teacups by Cecilia Levy

Swedish artist Cecilia Levy creates cups, saucers, bowls, plates and saucers made from recycled book pages.

"I have a background as a graphic designer and bookbinder. In 2009, I began experimenting with 3-dimensional shapes; taking apart an old book, tearing it into small pieces and pasting them back together again (resulting in a wobbly, but expressive, bowl). I had suddenly found "my" material. Ever since then I'm on the lookout for suitable old books..."

Insect Origami by Brian Chan

American artist Brian Chan designed these amazingly detailed origami insects made from a single sheet of paper.

“I started by copying work of other authors about 20 years ago but after a while I was good enough to start coming up with my own pieces.”

"When I was growing up, my parents bought me a lot of origami books they start with simple models and then the diagrams get more and more complex near the end, so they are good sources for independent learning."

"That year I folded about 10 models for the MIT Origami Competition, and I won several more awards. Since then I've made more than 100 original designs."

"The basic idea behind creating origami is simple, you are allocating sections of your flat sheet of paper which become folded parts of your model."

"The method I most often use use is called circle packing. Essentially, appendages in the model are formed when circular regions of paper fold umbrella-like into thin flaps."

"Beyond this, there are a lot of other techniques I use to make my models uniquely mine, and much of it just comes from experience, intuition and folding the model many different ways until it is perfect."
