Amazing Tree Sculptures by Tommy Craggs

British artist Tommy Craggs carves these elaborate sculptures using a chainsaw.

He caused a stir in the wooded area around the UK town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, by anonymously carving a series of sculptures there.

[link]

He says, " Having learnt the use of chainsaws and tree felling, I have learnt a lot about trees and types of wood etc."

[link]

"I started carving, using my skills with the chainsaw, and my interest in art from my school years."

[link]

"I have now found the art form for which I am now practising and love the art of chainsaw carving wood sculptures. All my carvings are made from trees which have either fell naturally or need to be felled for woodland management purposes."

[link]

"I see the trees come back to life in my artistic struggle working against the grain, with all of the beauty of the wood showing through."

American inspiration Jessica Drenk and Australian artist Lionel Bawden have each created these pencil sculptures by glueing the hexagonal sticks of pencils together and then carving the resulting block, to form interesting abstract forms.

Lionel Bawden utilizes more geometric shapes and colored pencils to create pattern with a variety of textures and depth. The pieces appear to be smooth, more color and design.

While Jessica Drenk creates a more organic feel and a texture-rich structures. The carved result looks like a piece of driftwood found in nature.

The dramatic sculpture was made from 3,000 coat hangers with the hooks straightened so they appear to be sticking out of the body
