Artist Sarah A. Smith creates these beautiful Gold Drawings using metal leaf, corrosive, ink, and pencil.
Sarah uses imitation gold leaf that was mined and manufactured in China. She then corrodes, tarnishes and destroys it with a chemical process.
To create her master pieces, she dipped her brush into a jar of diluted copper sulfate and brushed it across the surface of the shiny metal leaf which creates an acidic reaction - an accelerated oxidation of elements- that makes all the dark brown brushwork.
By using this technique, her intention is to convey a message about the harmful effects that human interventions can have on nature.
"The oxidation illustrates pollution, disintegration, transformation of elements, changes, and the passage of time."
